registering with the embassy

Discipleship Travel LLC recommends that all international travelers register their presence in the host country with the embassy at their destination.

To register with a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad can enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service allows the State Department to contact you in case of an emergency and provides you with important travel updates. 

Here’s how to register:

1. Go to the STEP website:

Access the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program website at travel.state.gov.

2. Create an account or log in:

You can either create a new account using Login.gov, or log in if you already have one.

3. Register your trip:

Provide your travel details, including your destination and the dates of your visit.

4. Receive updates and alerts:

Once registered, you’ll receive relevant alerts and updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. 

Key benefits of registering:

1. Emergency communication:

In case of an emergency, the embassy or consulate can quickly contact you and provide assistance.

2. Travel updates:

Receive timely information on travel advisories, security threats, and other important updates for your destination.

3. Assistance abroad:

STEP helps the embassy or consulate locate and assist U.S. citizens during emergencies, such as natural disasters or civil unrest. 

Discipleship Travel LLC recommends that travelers obtain travel insurance against risks during travel (e.g., emergency medical and evacuation, missed connection, lost luggage, trip interruption/delay, repatriation, etc.) and prior to travel (e.g., trip cancellation).
