Memphis is famous for its BBQ, and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest convenes today, May 15 and concludes May 18. If you are participating in the contest, or just get caught up in the excitement of it all, be aware that you may not be able to bring your souvenir sauce in your carry-on baggage. If your bottle of sauce is larger than 3.4 ounces TSA will flag that bottle.
TSA spokesperson Mark Howell says that the TSA will not confiscate bottles that are too large, they always will offer you the opportunity to go back and check the sauce in your checked luggage. However, in reality, that’s a pretty complicated solution, which usually results in passengers simply surrendering their sauce at security checkpoint. A better option, according to Howell, is to place your sauce in your checked luggage from the beginning. If you do, though, make sure that it is sufficiently wrapped in plastic in case it breaks in your luggage.
